Winter in the Gardens

Many people think winter in a garden is a bleak time of year. Coolcarrigan always has something to enjoy.

The bark of many of the trees can be more appreciated with the absence of leaf cover. Acer Griseum, Betula Costata, Betula Albo-sinensis, Prunus serrula thibetica and Arbutus uendo are some of the trees to be found at Coolcarrigan.

The shape, form and colour of many of the evergreen shrubs and trees become of great interest. Trees such as Pinus Brewerana, Abies Nordmanniana, Sequoiadendron giganteum, Cryptomeria japonica, Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Pembury Blue. Shrubs of interest are Ilex Aquifolium Green Pillar, Ilex aquifolium Silver Milkboy, Drimys winterii. Palms like Trachycarpus fortunei.

A fantastic display of snowdrops on the main avenue up to the house indicates that winter is drawing to a close. An almost solid mass of white that has been generated by natural spread with assistance from past gardeners and members of the family.
